GRAMMAR – Collocations with GO

A collocation is made up of two or more words that are commonly used together. Think of collocations as words that usually go together.

Sometimes GO is used without any preposition or article with creates the following list:

  • Go home
  • Go downtown
  • Go abroad
  • Go north/south
  • Go left/right

 

We often GO TO a location. Look at this list:

  • Go to school
  • Go to work
  • Go to college
  • Go to university
  • Go to prison
  • Go to jail

 

We sometime use GO TO A and a noun. Look at this list:

  • Go to a party
  • Go to a concert/gig
  • Go to a conference
  • Go to a meeting
  • Go to a play

 

We sometime use GO ON and a noun. Look at this list:

  • Go on holiday/vacation
  • Go on a trip
  • Go on a cruise
  • Go on an adventure
  • Go on a safari

 

We sometime use GO TO THE and a location. Look at this list:

  • Go to the park
  • Go to the cinema
  • Go to the bank
  • Go to the supermarket
  • Go to the airport
  • Go to the beach

 

We sometime use GO FOR and an activity. Look at this list:

  • Go for a run
  • Go for a walk
  • Go for a jog
  • Go for a hike
  • Go for swim
  • Go for drive
