Using Present Tenses to Talk About the Future

Did you know we can use the simple present and the present continuous tenses to talk about the future?

Let’s dive into how we do this!

Simple Present for Future Events

When to use:
We use the simple present to talk about scheduled events in the near future. These are usually events based on a timetable or schedule.

Examples:

  • “The train leaves at 6 PM.” 🚆
(This is a scheduled event based on the train timetable.)
  • “The movie starts at 8 PM.” 🎬
(This is a scheduled event based on the cinema schedule.)

Present Continuous for Future Plans

When to use:
We use the present continuous to talk about future plans or arrangements. These are usually personal plans made by individuals.

Examples:

  • “I am meeting my friends tomorrow.” 👫
    (This is a personal plan.)
  • “She is flying to Paris next week.” ✈️
    (This is a personal arrangement.)

Key Differences:

  • Simple Present:
    • Scheduled events (train, classes, movies)
    • Based on timetables
    • Example: “The store opens at 9 AM.”
  • Present Continuous:
    • Personal plans/arrangements (meeting friends, traveling)
    • Decided by individuals
    • Example: “We are having dinner with them tonight.”
